High Velocity Industrial Fans

High Velocity Industrial Fans are ventilation devices which consist of an impeller or propeller mounted on a shaft which is used to move a large volume of air in small periods of time. An industrial fan has a CFM range of two hundred to two million. CFM is an acronym for “Cubic Feet per Minute”. Some of the applications of high velocity industrial fans are for heat dissipation, industrial ventilation, crop aeration cooling and drying, and heat extraction. Industrial fans consist of sealed motors. There are two types of Industrial fans. These are labeled centrifugal fans and axial fans.

Centrifugal Fans

Centrifugal Fans are air movement devices which pull air into its system at a perpendicular direction to the expelled air. A centrifugal fan consists of an impeller, a close knit housing, a shaft and a drive. The impeller is built with the ribs situated in such a way to pull air from the eye or middle of the housing through the inlet, and expel it at the periphery through an outlet. The housing closes and houses the unit and the impeller rotates as close to it as possible to maintain constant pressure and efficient air movement. These fans are great for high pressure ventilation applications such as particle aeration, industrial combustion engines and compressed gas or air flow.

Axial Fans

Axial fans move air along the direction of the shaft’s axis that the impeller is mounted on. Axial fans can operate with or without a housing because they are not completely dependent on pressure. Axial fans push and pull air parallel in direction the axis it rotates on by creating pressure differences on each side of the blades. Axial fan work the best when they are constructed with a housing that runs close to the circumference of the blade. Some axial fans are made within a tube to maximize its aerodynamic and air flow capability. Axial fans are great for ventilation, heating and cooling.

High Velocity Fans

Compared to low velocity fans, High velocity fans usually have a smaller blade depth to lower the impeller’s mass and enable high rotation speed capabilities. Larger volumes means that the fan does not have to spin as fast to do the same amount of work. Driving a fan with a massive impeller takes a lot of energy.

This is why a smaller fan will usually operate at higher speeds than a large fan. High Velocity Industrial Fans are usually relatively small axial fans. This is due to the fact that High Velocity fans are more for ventilation when compared to workhorses such as centrifugal compressors. Some high speed fans are used for industrial compression, but they are small in size and are centrifugal such as the turbine compressor on an airplane engine. High velocity fans are used more to generate rapid gas and air movement.

High speed centrifugal fans, which are similar to the kind that Custom Fans of Australia designs, are great for collecting dust, exhausting corrosive gases and handling high pressures and temperatures. This is why they are used for large vacuum cleaners and exhaust systems that might have dirty or contaminated air. The vanes are designed to minimize the amount of cleaning and maintenance needed due to the trapping and build of particles on or inside the blade. These fans can be custom built by certified professionals for specific situations and environments. Some High pressure applications can be fitted with a silencer to minimize the noise.

High Speed Axial fans are versatile with regard to mounting options. The correct support will allow this fan to be mounted almost anywhere. Applications such as manufacturing environments and high traffic areas benefit from this fan whether it is mounted on a wall, in a ceiling or on a roof. The design facilitates the connection of round ducts to the front and back and the motor is housed within the housing cylinder behind the impeller. Adjustable pitch fans allow the blades angle to be change to generate varying pressure and volume aspects with regard to a constant speed. Each blade’s angle can be rotated at the hub.

When choosing a High Velocity Industrial Fans, consider a custom built supplier that can provide a good vibration analysis, and strong engineering facts and numbers.
