Industrial Box Fans

Industrial Box Fans consist of large impellers housed in square boxes.  Used for ventilation purposes, the Industrial Box Fans can either be centrifugal or axial. For the purposes of this article, we will be focusing on the axial applications.

Industrial Box Fan Design

The impeller in an axial box fan is designed to move air in the direction of the shaft along its blades. It takes the shape of a normal ventilation fan’s aerofoil blades. Box fans do not generally generate high pressures unless other features are added. Some box fans are fitted with a ring running around the periphery of the blade to mimic a round housing axial fan.

This design is basically an axial fan with a round peripheral that is placed in a box. The term ’box’ relates to the design of the fan which is a round impeller placed in a square box. The distance of the housing varies from the circumference of the blade due to its square shape. This means that the fan will not create a constant pressure and volume around the edge of the blade. Box fans are mostly driven with gas or electric motors due to their design.

Custom Box Fans

Box fans can be customized to fit the specific application needed. Square-shaped HDG and Aluminum Dampers with adjustable vanes can be connected to box fans to vary the volume and pressure of the air passing through it. Box fans are not usually used with ducts. They are mostly placed in a wall or division between two regions to expel or pull in air, but they can be installed to use ducts.

Custom ductwork made of steel, and shape adapters to change the shape of the opening from square to circle can be used to enclose the system and transport the air to round poly ducting. The main advantage of an industrial box fan is that it can be installed with ease in most locations due to its shape. Mounts do not usually need to be created as they can be placed within most windows and openings. This also makes them very portable.

Factories and industrial buildings which require the fan to be moved and serve multiple locations at different times are perfect for box fans. Due to their massive size, it is recommended that Large Trailers be purchased and used to transport the fans. These trailers consist of four wheels and a mounting device which it uses to be pulled by a van, tractor or truck.

Axial Box Fans

They may not be as impressive or suitable for heavy industry and pressure specific use as a tube axial fan or an axial fan with the housing constantly situated near the circumference of the blade. The round housing is very functional in specific cases where constant conditions are required. Large gaps between the blades edge and the housing generates turbulent air flow and affects the surrounding air, some of which passes directly through the blades.

The difference in pressure also creates ripples around the edge. Because of their well planned and engineered design, axial fans can also be made to create and vary volume and pressure conditions with static vanes placed in the path of the flow. They are also more efficient due to the pressure they create within the controlled and minor proximity between the housing and the blade’s edge.

Axial fans, like the type that Custom Fans designs, fit well with flexible and complex ducting configurations and can be designed to be mounted in most places. The blades on axial fans can either be fixed pitch or variable pitch. Variable Pitch impellers are made with blades that can be rotated at the base of the rib by the hub of the impeller to adjust the volume or pressure that the blade generates at a certain speed. Tube Axial fans are simply axial fans within a tube to generate better aerodynamic and laminar flow.

  • You might have a square or rectangular window that would work best for increased air movement in your application.
  • You might want a fan that can be easily moved or removed when convenient.
  • Whatever it is, you might still see a box fan as the best choice for your application. Why not have it custom built?

Selecting the right size box fan is as easy as consulting the our professionals; accurate acoustic, vibrational and engineering information will lead you to the best purchase. Measuring the size of the opening, or the litre per second flow, rest assured that our fan application design placements are the right size fan for your situation. When you are selecting Industrial Box Fans, it is best to choose a manufacturer that will also supply the relevant fittings, accessories and equipment to facilitate its proper installation.
